“A Monster Called Love” is a video art work that constitutes a personal commentary on the excessively saturated use of the word love, as well as on the concept itself. The construction and presentation of the video function allegorically. I sought to embody a concept—love—and to present another of its aspects: the darker side it may assume when certain very delicate balances are exceeded.
The terms love and romantic love are often used in a biased manner to describe something beautiful and nurturing. This, however, is not always the case. Frequently, love for the self surpasses love for the other, with destructive consequences, raising issues of imposition (under the pretext of protection), devaluation, violence, and ultimately hatred. The aim of the video is not to depict such scenes, but rather to re-signify an apparently familiar condition and to prompt the viewer to reflect on the fragile boundaries that define it.
Το “A monster called love” είναι ένα video art, το οποίο αποτελεί ένα προσωπικό μου σχόλιο επάνω στην υπερβολικά κορεσμένη χρήση της λέξης love, καθώς και στην έννοιάς της. Το στήσιμο και η απόδοση του video λειτουργεί αλληγορικά. Προσπάθησα να ενσαρκώσω μια έννοια – ιδέα (love) και να παρουσιάσω μια άλλη πτυχή αυτής, τη σκοτεινή πλευρά που μπορεί να έχει όταν ξεπεραστούν κάποιες πολύ λεπτές ισορροπίες. Η χρήση των όρων της αγάπης και του έρωτα προκατειλημμένα χρησιμοποιείται για να περιγραφεί κάτι όμορφο και στοργικό. Δεν είναι πάντα όμως έτσι. Πολλές φορές η αγάπη για τον εαυτό υπερβαίνει την αγάπη για τον άλλο, με ολέθριες συνέπειες, εγείροντας θέματα επιβολής (υπό το πρόσχημα της προστασίας), υποτίμησης, βίας, και τελικά μίσους. Στόχος του video δεν είναι να αναπαραστήσει αυτές τις σκηνές, αλλά να νοηματοδοτήσει αλλιώς μια φαινομενική συνθήκη και να προβληματίσει τον θεατή για τα ευαίσθητα όρια που ορίζουν αυτή.
