Serpent and Lily

Grounded in the concepts of freedom and love, the video functions allegorically, drawing a parallel between these two notions. What is the definition of freedom, and where do its limits lie? At what point does freedom begin to intertwine with restriction, commitment, confinement, and suffocation? And what, ultimately, is the role of love? Does it operate as a liberating force, or does it render individuals captive to a higher power? Does love emancipate the human being, or does it turn them into its prey? And, in the end, who survives: the serpent or the lily? Or perhaps no one at all?
This video poem is based on the homonymous literary work by Nikos Kazantzakis, from which two excerpts have been borrowed. Following the diary-like structure of the book, the work attempts a visual articulation of the complexity (and perhaps the brutality) of the intense emotions that overwhelm the loving subject, through a parallelism between life and death. Functioning allegorically, the body—gendered or ungendered—struggles to survive within the emotional conflict imposed upon it by the mind. A wretched subject…

Βασισμένο στις έννοιες της ελευθερίας και του έρωτα, το βίντεο λειτουργεί αλληγορικά, παραλληλίζοντας τις δύο αυτές έννοιες. Ποιος είναι ο ορισμός της ελευθερίας και ποια τα όριά της; Πότε η ελευθερία αρχίζει να περιπλέκεται με τον περιορισμό, τη δέσμευση, τον εγκλεισμό, την ασφυξία; Και ποιος είναι τελικά ο ρόλος του έρωτα; Λειτουργεί λυτρωτικά ή κάνει τα άτομα δέσμια μιας ανώτερης δύναμης; Ο έρωτας απελευθερώνει τον άνθρωπο ή τον κάνει έρμαιό του; Και ποιος επιβιώνει στο τέλος: ο όφις ή το κρίνο; Ή μήπως κανείς;
Το παρόν video poem βασίζεται στο ομότιτλο λογοτεχνικό έργο του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη, από το οποίο έχει δανειστεί δύο αποσπάσματα. Ακολουθώντας την ημερολογιακή προσέγγιση του βιβλίου, γίνεται μια προσπάθεια οπτικής αποτύπωσης της πολυπλοκότητας (ίσως και βαναυσότητας) των έντονων συναισθημάτων που κατακλύζουν το ερωτευμένο υποκείμενο, μέσα από έναν παραλληλισμό ζωής και θανάτου. Λειτουργώντας αλληγορικά, το σώμα, άφυλο ή μη, παλεύει να επιβιώσει μέσα από τη συναισθηματική πάλη στην οποία το υποβάλλει το μυαλό. Δύστυχο υποκείμενο...
